The Finder in OS X has a bug. It cannot show where the original of an alias was, if it cannot find the original itself. Be it because you just copied everything to a different computer, or because you discovered this 7 year old alias that doesn't point to anywhere now.

Now this is extremely annoying, cause this information is very useful if you want to locate the missing original yourself.
